CONSTITUTION OF THE VIRGINIA SOCIAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION

ARTICLE I — NAME

The name of the Association shall be the Virginia Social Science Association.

 

ARTICLE II — PURPOSES

The purposes of the organization shall be:

1. To promote acquaintance and group effort among those interested in the social

sciences.

2. To further the cause of social science teaching and research.

3. To stimulate greater public interest in, and better informed public opinion regarding,

social science questions and public policy matters.

4. To have some part in guiding the current of economic and social tendencies in

Virginia.

5. To cooperate with and further the work of local, state, and national organizations

working in the same field.

 

ARTICLE III — MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. There shall be six categories of members in the Association: Individual,

Student, Life, Benefactor, Honorary, and Institutional.

Section 2. Membership is open to persons who, and institutions that, subscribe to the

purposes of the Association.

Section 3. All individual members shall have the full rights and privileges of

membership. Institutional members shall receive two copies of the VSSA JOURNAL.

Section 4. Membership dues shall be established by the Executive Committee, according

to category of membership, and shall be payable on a schedule determined by the

Executive Committee.

Section 5. Any person who has performed notable service for the cause of social science

in Virginia may be elected to Honorary Life Membership in the Association without

payment of membership dues.

 

ARTICLE IV — OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES

Section 1. The elective officers of the Association shall consist of a president, a vicepresident,

a secretary, a treasurer, an auditor, and six directors. Appointive officers, who

may be directors, are an historian-archivist, a parliamentarian, a webmaster, and the

editors of the VIRGINIA SOCIAL SCIENCE JOURNAL (the VSSJ) and the VSSA

NEWSLETTER.

Section 2. The president shall be the executive officer of the Association under the

direction of the executive committee. The president shall be responsible for the election

of officers, for expansion of membership, and for the recruitment of institutional

members.

Section 3. The vice-president, who shall serve in the absence of the president, shall

normally have the primary responsibility for the program of the annual meeting.

Section 4. The secretary of the Association shall maintain the minutes of all meetings of

the executive committee; maintain a register of all members, and produce at the direction

of the executive committee a Directory of Membership.

Section 5. The treasurer shall receive and disburse all funds of the Association, keep

records of all transactions, and submit a written summary thereof to the executive

committee at its meetings and to the membership at the annual meeting. The treasurer is

responsible for notifying members of the status of their dues to the Association.

Section 6. The auditor shall conduct an audit of the records of the treasurer, prior to the

annual meeting, and report on such audit to the executive committee.

Section 7. The historian is responsible for organizing and maintaining records of the

VSSA and facilitating their use for research.

Section 8. The parliamentarian shall assure that meetings of the executive committee and

the annual meeting are conducted according to proper procedure. The parliamentarian is

responsible for maintaining the constitution of the association and for the process of

amending it.

Section 9. The immediate past president has primary responsibility for the scholar

awards at the annual meeting.

 

ARTICLE V — COMMITTEES

Section 1. The Association shall have an executive committee, consisting of the elective

officers and the appointive officers; a nominating committee; and any other committees

or teams, such as local arrangements and student essay awards, deemed by it to be

desirable.

Section 2. The executive committee is responsible for the policies and direction of the

Association, its meetings and publications, and expansion of its membership, and has

authority over the expenditure of Association funds.

Section 3. The executive committee shall meet on call of the president or at the request

of any three of its members. Five elective members shall constitute a quorum for any

called meeting.

Section 4. The executive committee may remove and replace any appointive members

who, in the committee's judgment, shall fail to carry out their responsibilities.

 

ARTICLE VI — ELECTIONS AND TERMS

Section 1. A nominating committee, comprised of the president, the vice-president, and

chaired by the immediate past president, shall submit nominations for elective officers to

the membership at the annual meeting. Nominations from the floor shall be in order.

Section 2. The vice-president shall normally succeed to the position of president.

Section 3. The elective officers shall be chosen by the membership of the Association at

the annual meeting for terms of one year, which shall commence at the close of the

annual meeting.

Section 4. The executive committee shall expeditiously fill any vacancy that may occur.

 

ARTICLE VII — MEETINGS

Section 1. The Association shall hold at least one meeting of the membership, which

shall be known as “the annual meeting.”

Section 2. The executive committee shall meet at the time of the annual meeting.

Normally, it will also meet in September (to inaugurate plans for the next annual meeting,

initiate the call for papers, and make plans for scholar and other awards) and in January

(to complete plans for the meeting).

 

ARTICLE VIII — AMENDMENTS

This constitution may be amended at the annual meeting by a vote of two-thirds of the

members present and voting. Proposed amendments must have been approved by the

executive committee and published in the VSSA NEWSLETTER.
